Olbia, gateway to Gallura
An ancient harbour town, Punic and then Roman, Olbia was called Terranova for centuries and took back its old name in 1939. Today it is Sardinia's main arrival point for ferries and holiday flights, with a lively centre around Corso Umberto and the Romanesque basilica of San Simplicio.
To the north lies the Costa Smeralda, with Porto Rotondo and Porto Cervo; in front of the gulf rises the island of Tavolara; to the south are the beaches of Porto Istana, Cala Brandinchi and San Teodoro.
